James “Jim” R. Beck
James Robert Beck, known affectionately to friends and family as Jim, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024, in Bay City, Michigan, due to natural causes. Born on August 19, 1936, in Midland, Michigan, to the late Nicholas and Katherine (Furst) Beck.
Jim’s life was a testament to the enduring power of kindness, generosity, and a good sense of humor. Jim’s journey began in a close-knit community where he was raised alongside his siblings Chuck Howe, Nancy Stanton, and Barbara (Dennis) Broderick. He also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Patricia Howe, and a legacy of love and laughter with many nieces, nephews, and cousins. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he was a devoted father to his daughter, Dawn K. Beck, a caring step-father to Charles (Amanda) Woods, a doting grandfather to Dustin (Sarah) Beck, and an adoring great-grandfather to young James Robert Beck; who was his namesake and pride and joy, as well as Dawn and Chip’s mother Mary (Matthew) Korson.
For over five decades, Jim was the proud owner and operator of J.B. Excavating of Linwood, Inc. His work ethic and commitment to his craft earned him respect and admiration within the community. Jim was also an active member of the Crump Fox Club and the Bay County Gun Club, where he enjoyed the camaraderie and shared interests with fellow members. Family was the heart of Jim’s world, and he embraced the role of caretaker with open arms. He had an innate ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, a trait that drew people to him and made him a beloved figure in his community. Jim will be fondly remembered for his tender heart, always extending a helping hand to those in need. His generosity knew no bounds; if someone was down on their luck, Jim would offer them work, ensuring they had a chance to earn a few dollars during tough times. Those who knew Jim would describe him as generous, kind, and funny. His sense of humor brought joy to every gathering, and his laughter was infectious. Jim’s presence was a source of comfort and happiness for his family and friends, and his absence will leave a void that cannot be filled.
As we bid farewell to Jim, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life filled with love, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to others.
