Marsha A. Oates
Marsha Ann Oates, a cherished soul whose life was guided by love, courage, and selflessness, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2026, at McLaren Bay Region Medical Center from complications from COPD. She was born on August 1, 1948, in St. Clair, Michigan, Marsha was the daughter of the late Alfred and Cora Belle (Harris) LaFrance-Wollen.
She grew into a remarkable woman, whose warmth and kindness touched all who knew her. Marsha’s life was rich with love and companionship. On February 21, 1976, she married the love of her life, John Oates, at Magnolia E.U.B. Church in Southfield. Marsha is lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 49 years, John, their children Bruce (Kellie) Nelson, Annette (Darrell) Cousineau, and Brian (Kim Peterson) Nelson. Her legacy continues through her cherished grandchildren: Cristen, Renee, Jennifer, Sarah, Gleb, Chad, Jessica, Jonathan, Kyle, Cienna, Austin (fiancée Mackenzie) Cousineau, Dallas (Aryssa) Cousineau, Megan (Danni) Holtman, Alexander Nelson, Crystal Chatfield, and Faith Grice, as well as her ten great-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter on the way. Marsha’s brothers, James LaFrance and Steve (Serena) Wollen, will hold dear the memories of their sister’s vibrant spirit. She is preceded in death by her daughter Christine Nelson, and her siblings Pamela Nolin, Sheila Burrell, and David LaFrance.
Throughout her career, Marsha’s industrious and creative nature led her to various places of employment. In her later years, she was a beloved member of the Pinny Food Center team for a decade. Her passion for creativity found its true calling at Bonnies Sewing Center, where she shared her love for quilting by teaching classes. Marsha and John were also proud members of the Bay Heritage Quilting Guild for many years, where they both enjoyed the camaraderie and artistry of the quilting community.
Marsha’s interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. She found solace and joy in quilting, meticulously crafting each piece with love and care. Her green thumb was evident in her well-tended flower beds, and she took great pleasure riding her mower cutting her grass. In her earlier years, Marsha enjoyed bowling, a pastime that brought her fun and friendship. Above all, Marsha’s greatest delight was traveling and spending precious time with her family and adored grandchildren. The moments shared and the memories created during these times were the treasures of her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, January 28, 2026 at 2 pm from the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home with Pastor John Tousciuk presiding with inurnment at a later date in Garfield Township Cemetery. Friends may visit the Lee-Ramsay Funeral Home on Wednesday, from 10 am until time of service.
