Thomas Verellen

Thomas Lawrence “Tom” Verellen, age 82, a spirited soul known for his wisdom and love of adventure, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, in Saginaw, Michigan. Born on March 27, 1943, in Bay City, Michigan, to the late Jack & Catherine (Willette) Verellen. Tom’s early years were spent in the quaint setting of the one room State Road Schoolhouse, where he learned the values of community and hard work.

Tom grew up in Pinconning where he worked at the Road Side Zoo and later for Harvey Bogart trucking at a young age. As a proud member of the 101st Airborne Unit, he embodied the courage and spirit of those who defend our nation. After his military service, he continued to contribute to his community through his work with the Local 1098 Laborers’ Union in Saginaw, from which he retired after many years of faithful service. Tom married Diane T. Showalter on October 25, 2002 they spent 16 happy years together before her passing.

Family was the cornerstone of Tom’s life. He was a beloved father to Beate (David) McKinnon, Tom (Jennifer) Verellen, and Angie (Josh Davis) Verellen. His legacy flourished through his cherished grandchildren, Heidi (Jeremy) Kato, Andrew (Ayla) Burr, Zachary, Gavin, and Lauren, as well as his great-grandchildren, Julius, Alice, Andrew, Silas, Ivory, and Iris. Stepchildren: Amy (Jorge Alearaz) Showalter and Sara (John) Beckman. His brother, Jack “Sam” (Linda) Verellen, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, will fondly remember Tom’s infectious laughter and sage advice. His presence will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. Tom was preceded in death by eight of his siblings, a testament to the longevity and resilience of his family.

An avid outdoors-man, Tom’s passion for gardening and hunting morel mushrooms was well-known among his friends and family. He took great pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor, especially the bittersweets, with his loved ones. Tom’s zest for life was evident in his willingness to embark on any adventure and partake in a bit of mischief, always with a twinkle in his eye.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, December 14, 2025 at 1:00 pm at Lee Ramsay Funeral Home Pinconning Chapel, with Pastor Merry Henderson presiding, with inurnment at Fraser Township Cemetery. Friends and family may visit at the Funeral home from 11:00 am until time of service.
